  • Undergraduate: JCU's Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Ecology provides you with the knowledge and skills required to understand the evolution, behaviour and ecology of animals and plants, including how ecosystems function and how animals and plants respond to environmental changes, both natural and man-made. Courses cover ecology, conservation biology, and tropical forest ecosystems. 
  • Graduate: JCU offers a Graduate Certificate of Science in Tropical Biology and Conservation with a wide range of electives. Students can structure their courses to specialise in the ecology of rainforests, savannah, tropical freshwater systems, tropical wildlife, or tropical insects.

Application Process

Step 1. Prerequisits and eligibility
Undergraduate academic entry requirements
Satisfactory completion (a pass) of one year at a recognised university or other post-secondary institution at date of application - minimum GPA of 2.8 (all students with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.7 will also be considered for the study abroad program). Students from Freshman Year are considered on a case-by-case basis; or successful completion of High School Diploma or equivalent with SAT score of 1000; or an ACT score of 22.

Postgraduate academic entry requirements
Bachelor Degree; or equivalent.

English entry requirements
If your native language is not English, you may be required to demonstrate English proficiency by sitting a recognised test of your English language ability (including IELTS, TOEFL, or Pearson). Learn more here

The JCU Study Abroad and the Exchange Programs offer you the opportunity to study in tropical North Queensland for one or two semesters. To begin your application process please apply to the program relevant to you below. 
  • Study Abroad: This program allows you to undertake one or two semesters of study at James Cook University and gain credit for that study at your home institution. Undergraduate Study Abroad students can study for one or two semesters at either Townsville or Cairns campuses. Postgraduate Study Abroad students can study for one semester at either Townsville or Cairns campuses. Learn more and apply here.
  • Exchange Program: OSU is an official partner insitution of the JCU. If you are eligible for the exchange program, OSU will provide you with a Letter of Nomination which you will submit with your JCU Exchange application. Learn more and apply here. 
If you have met the entry requirements you can select your subjects. It is recommend that you select between 6 and 10 subjects to ensure you have sufficient options should your first preference not be available.

Step 2. Application

OSU GO Application deadlines:

  • Fall or full year (Fall/Winter/Spring): Feb. 15
  • Winter/Spring: October 15

Required Documents

  • Previous and current degree certificates (if completed at time of application) and academic transcripts 
  • Grading Scale used at the institution/s you have undertaken your studies
  • English proficiency test results (if required and available at time of application)
  • Copy of your passport to confirm your name and citizenship (if available at time of application)
If you application is successful you will receive an Offer Letter outlining your subjects, payments required and any conditions that need to be met prior to accepting your offer. Complete and sign each page of the Offer Letter, make appropriate payment (as set out in your Offer Letter) and return to James Cook International.
